The year 2025 marked a significant turning point for the business tourism sector, with in-person events dominating. According to Interface MICE’s annual survey, 93 per cent of events took place in person, whilst hybrid and virtual formats saw a decline in popularity. This trend highlights the importance of human connection in the professional world, strengthening team cohesion and facilitating the communication of key messages.
However, the current geopolitical context, particularly the conflict in the Middle East, is reshaping the MICE market. Growing tensions in the region have led to the postponement or even cancellation of events scheduled in countries such as Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. As a result, professionals are increasingly turning to safe destinations, with a marked preference for Europe. France, in particular, tops the list of organisers’ choices, closely followed by Spain and Italy.
Corporate social responsibility (CSR) also plays a crucial role in event planning. Organisers are now required to take sustainability into account in their decisions, whether regarding travel, accommodation or local service providers. Trains are increasingly being favoured over aeroplanes, and the activities on offer must have a positive impact on local communities. This increased focus on CSR reflects a shift in corporate expectations, as companies seek to align their operations with ethical and sustainable values.
Despite these challenges, event budgets remain broadly stable, highlighting the sector’s resilience. MICE agencies continue to benefit from client loyalty whilst attracting new partners through innovative and responsible proposals. Against this backdrop, the European MICE market presents itself as an attractive alternative, offering both security and opportunities for growth.
In conclusion, whilst the conflict in the Middle East poses challenges, it also opens up prospects for the MICE market in Europe. Industry professionals are called upon to adapt quickly, prioritising safety, sustainability and innovation to meet the changing needs of their clients.
